Guide to New Zealand
Guide to New Zealand
New Zealand is blessed with spectacularly beautiful landscapes, vast mountain ranges and sweeping coastlines. While rich in experiences for lovers of the great outdoors, New Zealand has something for everyone. Add to this a fascinating heritage of Maori culture, world-class sporting events, a passion for food and wine, and as location for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit, and you have a beautiful country bursting with holiday possibilities.
Getting there
The quickest flight to New Zealand from the UK is 25 hours. Many choose to break the journey with a stopover in the Far East, the Pacific or the USA. The following airlines offer flights to New Zealand; Air New Zealand, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines. Qantas, Royal Brunei, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. Most international flights arrive into Auckland Airport on the North Island. Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua, Queenstown and Dunedin Airports also receive some international flights. There is a very good network of domestic flights throughout the country.

When to go
You can visit New Zealand at any time of the year. Summer and winter temperatures vary by only about 10°C over most of the country, making New Zealand an ideal holiday destination all year round. New Zealand has four quite distinct seasons. Spring (September to November), Summer (December to February), Autumn (March to May) and Winter (June to August). In summer, there’s plenty of sunshine and activities in and around water including rafting, snorkelling and kayaking. In winter you’ll find snow on the mountains and excellent skiing. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as -10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC (70-90°F) and in winter between 10-15ºC (50-60°F). Summer (December to February) is moderate to hot, with temperatures hovering around 20-30ºC. Autumn (March to May) temperatures are a little cooler than summer but the weather can be excellent. It can cool off at night more during this season, so make sure you have a warm sweater. Winter (June to August) brings colder weather to much of the country, with snow in the south and rain in the north. Spring (September to November) brings weather of all types - expect everything from cold, frosty, clear days to sunny and hot.

Important to note
All visitors to New Zealand must carry a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to leave the country. UK passport holders do not need a visa to enter New Zealand, if staying less than six months.
